My Midlife Crises

I did a google search… women have their midlife crisis between the ages of 35-44. I thought that didn’t happen till your 50’s.

Botox crossed my mind. I take pills at 9pm…and I’ve considered a long, big, curly wig. I cradle dogs like babies…and I spend time searching my favorite bands from the 80s! For reals, y’all! (You should know, I’ve never said those three words together before.)

So, I sat myself down… (honestly, I look like a bag of potatoes with a top knot slumped in the right corner of the sofa) and began jotting down my thoughts about being in my 40’s.

It seems that as of late, either I or someone else brings up age. While in Guatemala, several asked if I was my friend’s mother.

She is 27.  t w e n t y s e v e n

So, if you are in your 40’s or just in a strange stage/place in life…you are not alone. Maybe if I throw myself out there, it will make things better for you. Maybe.

Here are 44 things that I’ve learned in my 44 years.

  1. 40’s are not “old.” Old is 100.
  2. Your head tells you that you can still hurdle a trash can, but your body reminds you that you can’t.
  3. People will always let you down, and I am people. I will let you down.
  4. You can’t argue with anyone and win. Love wins.
  5. Sin is sin. Anger, selfishness, etc.
  6. You don’t have to be friends with everyone and that’s okay. Cut ties if it’s for the health of one or both.
  7. Live your dream…don’t wait.
  8. Encourage others in their dreams – cheer each other on.
  9. A new job, boss, children, spouse, house with green eggs and ham are not the answer to your problems.
  10. Physical health is important.
  11. If you don’t know God, it’s because you’ve not spent enough time with Him.
  12. It’s not enough to have books. You must also read them.
  13. You know what you are good at…and what you’re not.
  14. You can’t compare how you look to someone in their 20’s.
  15. Humility is attractive.
  16. If I don’t write it down, I will forget it.
  17. Doctors require you to wear your paper gown differently.
  18. Don’t force things. If it’s meant to happen..it will.
  19. Things will always change. Accept it…embrace the rollercoaster.
  20. Teeth are expensive.
  21. You still need encouragement and compliments.
  22. Sugar is a real and serious addiction…and I, Connie, am a sugar addict.
  23. You think about death/heaven more often.
  24. Mom was right.
  25. Sunblock would have made a difference.
  26. I’m comfortable in who I am, but others might not be.
  27. You learn how to say “no”…and mean it.
  28. You have less drama in your life.
  29. Your hair is thinner and waist thicker.
  30. I wish I lived next door to my parents.
  31. You celebrate a healthy “smooth move”.
  32. Everyone is special…and that’s good!
  33. My family is amazing.
  34. Good people, God’s people, can disagree on politics and still be friends.
  35. I hide behind humor.
  36. I really, really, really hate sad things.
  37. I wish I were Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and was fighting injustice.
  38. I’m a good friend, despite doing a poor job staying in touch.
  39. Don’t believe everything you read or hear.
  40. Everyone is fighting a battle…and needs grace.
  41. I need 7 or more hours of sleep a night.
  42. Plants are important in a home.
  43. My love language is acts of service and gifts.
  44. Finger tattoos aren’t for everyone.

The End…for now.
