Along with 3 other women and security upon arrival… we head to Nigeria. Now, I know nothing about Nigeria. I will be a student, soaking it all up. It’s been a few years since my last trip to Africa. It is the second largest continent known for its heat, beautiful sunsets, and deserts. Not to mention the big five, deep cultural roots, and traditions.

And now I will tell you the story of a lovely lady (que the Brady Bunch theme music please…)

Her name is Lisa. I met Lisa in 2013 on one of the Adventures in Missions’ teams I led to Thailand. Actually it was before we even arrived in Thailand that we first spoke. It was over a phone conversation that I knew we would be friends.  She has a ministry of sewing adorable little dresses for girls and sending them around the world to those in need. I know less about sewing than I do about Nigeria. My sewing box is one that you pick up as you check out at the grocery store. I can’t tell you what’s even in it. I think thread and a needle. Maybe more. I’ve never opened it.

Sew…moving on.  Shortly following our Thailand trip, Lisa contacted me to talk further about another trip. I recalled her saying something about it while in Thailand, but at the time I thought it was just another great idea that wouldn’t come to pass. I learned quickly – don’t doubt this girl. She’s on a mission. Here’s what she presented:

“Would you be interested in joining me and a couple others on a trip to Nigeria to work in the brothels and prisons?” (She also mentioned something about teaching sewing – that went in one ear and out the other).

My response was “Yes!”  However, I shared that my schedule was tight and I didn’t have the funds. She explained that she had confidence that the Lord would provide and that my cost would be covered in full – and that they could be somewhat flexible with the dates.

With all visas applied for and the reassurance from those in DC that they will arrive in time, we are rushing to get appointments for our immunizations. Shots. Needles don’t bother me…it are the cost and the stuff they inject you with that concerns me. But, this is not an area in which I can skip the shots as I do with most other places. Malaria covers the entire country. Typhoid. Hep A and B. Polio. Meningitis. Tetnus and more. Blah, Blah Blah.  Highly recommended are Rabies and a list of others which I’ll pass. So it’s sore arms for us. So far, I’ve had 3 shots…totaling just under $300. Ouch. All this to say – prayer for our health is appreciated.

I miss my passport when it’s not in my possession. I think about it often, worrying that it’s ok. Does it miss me? I hope those in DC…adding my visa… are treating it with love. To read more about my relationship with my passport…visit here.

Who will I be working with…you might wonder? With Adventures in Missions’ permission and blessing…I will be working along side the Camiola family (of 7) with SIM… in Jos, Nigeria.  Melissa serves with Grace Gardens, working with the girls from the brothels and prison. It was while working in that a brothel that she met their soon to be daughter in the womb of the birth mother. At 18 months they welcomed little Nansik into their home as a Camiola.  It’s a beautiful story worth reading.

So much is unknown and uncertain right now – this area is a new one to me and although I’ve worked in brothels/bars in a handful of countries…. all are different. So I ask for prayer. For open eyes, ears, and heart.  For words, wisdom, and actions of love as I build new relationships…that I would be “the hands and feet”.

In addition, I will be given opportunities to use my experience with Purchase Effect in creating items for resale … a fair trade endeavor with proceeds being returned to further the work, ministry, and needs in Nigeria. Perhaps this is where I cross into the sewing part of this trip. I do have a great idea that I’m hoping to share with them! Stay tuned!

There is still time to partner with us to make a difference in the lives of the marginalized and exploited in Nigeria. Every little bit helps! You can click here to donate.

Thank you all.
