I often find myself humming this tune while racing around in foreign countries…

“I’m In A Hurry” by Alabama.

I’m in a hurry to get things done

Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun

All I really gotta do is live and die

But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.

Don’t know why

I have to drive so fast

My car has nothing to prove

It’s not new

But it’ll do 0 to 60 in 5.2.

Many countries have them. They come in all shapes, sizes and
colors. Some are run by manpower others by a motor of some sort.  All are exciting, fun, and
dangerous.  You must be smart.
Choose wisely when picking your tuk-tuk.

When you are not in a hurry, they are.

When you are hoping to enjoy the view…they seem to be in a
race. BUT, they never do “0 to 60 in 5.2”!

Oh I rush and rush until life’s no fun

All I really gotta do is live and die

But I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.

Can’t be late

I leave plenty of time

Shaking hands with the clock

I can’t stop

I’m on a roll and I’m ready to rock.

Here’s a few tips. If you get a chance to ride one…do!
Do a breath test. Don’t be obvious…but make a mental note.
If you are uncertain, move on. Tell them where you need to go and watch their reaction. If they seem
confused now, they will be even more confused later. Move on. There are 100’s
of other drivers looking to make a few extra baht, pesos, riel, rupees etc…who
will be sober and know where to go. Keep your hands and feet inside. Keep your
camera around your neck and bag on the floor out of reach of those speeding by
on motorcycles.  Make sure to
settle on a price prior to getting on and pay only after you get out. Don’t fling
your money around in the back seat and don’t distract the driver. They need to
keep their eyes on the road, whatever it might be. Just to name a few
distractions… in South America they dodge other drivers and fight for space on a
narrow road, in Central America it’s drivers and animals, in  Cambodia and Thailand – people,
motorcycles…and in India it’s all of the above plus the many sacred cows.

I hear a voice

That say’s I’m running behind

I better pick up my pace

It’s a race

And there ain’t no room

For someone in second place.

Tuk-Tuks remind me of the rat race of life.  As much as I enjoy a good race, I try
not to encourage tuk-tuk  racing.
However, often it’s out of the hands of the passenger. Should you be going with
several groups, they take it as a challenge.  What’s interesting is that you are both going
nowhere and “fast”. You continually pass one another… but arrive at the same
time. It might be fun, but your rear-end is clinched, your shoulders are above your
ears. You’ve missed the view, for you are driving with your imaginary wheel.
Why are we racing? There is so much to enjoy if we slow down. Ah, I need to
slow down. I need a massage…loosen my shoulders.

In our fast-paced, high speed, instant world today, waiting seems strange… as does slowing down. Patiently waiting is difficult. It’s where I sit now, in this moment, this season. 40 is approaching and I’m wondering what this next chapter in life has in store. Do I wait for God and his gracious returns to us? I read in a commentary that we we should “wait for him by faith, we must seek him
by prayer: our souls must seek him, else we do not seek so as to find.
Our seeking will help to keep up our waiting. And to those who thus wait
and seek God will be gracious; he will show them his
marvelous loving kindness.”

Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. (ESV)

I’m in a hurry and I don’t know why. So out of the tuk-tuk I climb and sit before the Lord.

  1. Wow did this ever bring back memories for me! I have been to Thailand many years ago (Bangkok & Chang Mai) and we did ride in Tuk-Tuks. The amount of motorcycles around were unbelievable and as you talk about the speed in which everyone traveled was chaotic. Thanks for sharing such a great analogy to our Christian life.
